Classes & Clubs

The choral music department at Surfside Middle School consists of a beginning chorus (first-year students entering the program)

Any student who is new to Surfside and interested in Musical Theatre will need to sing in a chorus and take a musical theatre class. This will require a PE waiver that parents must sign.

The Piano Club meets in the Choral Suite, room 123-E. We have twelve full-sized Yamaha Clavinovas with privacy headphones and two new Yamaha acoustic pianos. Students can sign up for practice slots on Mondays and Tuesdays or Thursdays and Fridays from 8:05 AM to 8:55 AM. There are no meetings on Wednesdays due to Faculty Meetings.

THE INTRODUCTIONS – Typically 6th Graders

The Introductions Chorus is comprised of 6th through 8th graders who are new to the chorus at Surfside Middle School and are beginning voice students. An audition is not required. The chorus consists of fundamental vocal technique, elementary choreography, ensemble skills, basic music literacy, and ear training through the preparation and performance of a variety of appropriate repertoire (Unison and two-part). The Introductions rehearse as a class daily and perform at several concerts and assessments throughout the year. Private voice lessons are encouraged for all members.

THE CHORAL REEF THEATRE CLASSES (It is called Music Techniques)

This class covers singing, acting, light dancing, and tech work for fall and spring productions. Students must take a choir class prior to enrolling or in the same year. They can waive PE to attend both classes.

THE SHARKETTES

The Sharkettes welcomes 7th and 8th-grade young ladies with at least one year of chorus experience – auditions are not required. Our program offers training in vocal technique, choreography, ensemble skills, music literacy, and ear training, with performances at concerts and assessments throughout the year. While private voice lessons are optional, we encourage all members to consider them. Outfits are provided, but girls will need to purchase caramel-colored character shoes and earrings to complete their look. Join us for a rewarding and enjoyable experience!

THE SURFSIDE SOUNDWAVES  (Showchoir)

The Surfside Soundwaves is an auditioned choral group for 6th through 8th graders, focused on providing a rigorous curriculum unique to their skill level and development. Membership is by audition only. The purpose is to offer experienced singers further opportunities for performance, creativity, and reflection within the rehearsal setting. Students can expect to grow vocally, musically, and academically in a safe and caring environment. Choreography skills are required, and the repertoire consists of Unison, 2-part, and 3-part mixed music. Additional rehearsals and special performances will be required and the purchase of a new/affordable show choir outfit will need to be considered.  More information to be discussed.

THE SURFSIDE CONCERT CHOIR (7th and 8th Graders)

The Surfside Concert Choir is a combined chorus for 6th through 8th graders, offering a rigorous choral curriculum tailored to their skill level and development. Membership is open to all chorus students who participate appropriately in their choir rehearsals. The purpose is to provide singers with opportunities for performance, creativity, and reflection in rehearsal, performance, and assessment settings. Students can expect to grow vocally, musically, and academically in a safe and caring environment alongside their peers. Additional rehearsals and special performances will be required in preparation for Music Performance Assessments (MPA).

PIANO CLASS – Homeroom (8:55 AM – 9:30 AM)

We’re lucky to have a Keyboard Lab equipped with eleven Yamaha Clavinova full-sized pianos. This smaller group class is open to students of all levels. Beginners will work in a group setting, while students with more experience and those who take private lessons can bring in their books for coaching and guidance from Mr. Mullen to enhance their lessons.

Special note to students:  Every rehearsal and performance is an audition for future projects and groups.  Always put your best foot forward in rehearsal (not just at an audition).
